I remember like it was yesterday, taking my first sip of Maxwell instant coffee that had more Dixie crystals and powdered coffee mate than instant grounds but whatever, it was creamy and sweet. And I was four. Watching my mother sip that magic potion turning her into Cinderella was every girl’s dream or at least mine; no I didn’t care to be Cinderella, I wanted the coffee.
Fast forward to 34 years later, I still savor the moment to enjoy a delicious cup of magical beans liquidated, but not Maxwell and really not anything of like and definitely not Starbucks. Over the years, I’ve dedicated myself to learning more about coffee in its purest form, I’ve taken courses from Specialty Coffee Association and have been a barista at numerous shops including Starbucks.
While I enjoy to science and art of being a Barista, my heart has always been on truly enjoying a simple cup of perfectly brewed coffee; educating consumers on which beans to purchase (always Arabica), how beans taste different BEFORE their roasting, for instance, if your beans come from Mexico they’ll have more chocolaty & smoky notes opposed to beans coming from Ethiopia which have brighter, citrusy notes – because of geography. Aside from the understanding of beans, filtered clean water, proper grind settings and what many forget, ounces per cup. I could go on and on about this but not today –
Anyway, to celebrate National Coffee Day this month, I’ve tried over 20 brands of coffee and these are my favorites.
Smart Sips
Their slogan is “drink your dessert” don’t have to tell me twice. I am seriously addicted to their Blueberry Cinnamon Crumble – this Shark Tank, the female-owned coffee company not only provides delicious non-flavored roast but their lattes & hot cocoa are only 70 calories per cup and 6 grams of sugar.
Sir Owlverick’s
Certified organic 3rd generation roaster, women-owned, minority-owned premium craft coffee company in Anaheim, CA. Since its inception in 2016, Owlverick’s creates classically rich and smooth roasted coffee and culturally authentic ready-to-drink bottled coffee.
Verve Coffee Rosters
Santa Cruz-based specialty coffee company that offers some of the world’s highest quality craft coffee, from single origin to blends to even their Flash Brew Coffees and Oat Milk lattes.
Quivr
Owned by brothers Ash & Mukunda Crawford and based in Boston, Massachusetts – truly sustainable brand from start to finish 1% for the planet. Their true, cold, nitro-infused cold brew is super smooth and ships in eco-friendly packaging even the ice pack turns into plant food.
The Morning Dram
For the spirit drinker, Tommy & his wife Davi are seriously brewing up some magic by adding the beans to aged in freshly emptied barrels from distilleries then Tommy & Davi use their senses to determine the appropriate time to remove the coffee beans from each barrel to achieve a rich, smooth finish. Now if that’s not sorcery, I am here for it. By the way, I am super obsessed with their branding.
Danger Coffee

Delight Coffee
Seriously a great cup of Joe right here. Did I mention that I am a purist, meaning I like my coffee black, dark as night and sometimes when you come across a nasty roast it can really burn your day, but this is absolutely perfect. I also love the fact that they give back to UNICEF and support Fairetrade.
Trade
TRADE Not necessarily a coffee brand itself but something for true coffee aficionados to explore a different brand and roasts on a subscription base platform. With more than 400 brands and 55+ roasters here in the US, Trade will make sure you’re never without a great cup.
Angelino’s Coffee
Truly exceptional and amazing, as I am writing this piece I am currently sipping on Chocolate Glaze with two sugar in the raws, the aroma itself tells me it’s gonna be a good day.
Akamai Coffee Company
Akamai means ‘smart, intelligent’ in the Hawaiian native language and their mission is to share exceptional coffee as the beans are locally grown on the island of Maui. Distinguished taste as the beans are much different than South American or Middle-East grown beans.
